Do you ever feel like you cannot find your purpose in life? Do you struggle with determining your path or the reasons why you do the things you do?
Today, I’m sharing with you my WHY, the why I get up and do the same things day in and day out, the reasons why I keep going. I get frustrated some days and feel like I could probably just scrap everything I do creatively, but I don’t and here’s why.
If you do not know by now, you know I’m pretty much a creative individual. I cannot stop, and CANNOT stop thinking about the things I can create with my hands. Ideas flow in and out. Often distracting me from a current idea I’m on. It is a crazy roller coaster of ideas and things I want to do and make.
In fact, one of the main reasons why I started this blog, was so that I could share my creative endeavors with you. Teach you and others to do the same; to create a community of sharing crafty ideas and projects. Provide ways to decorate or even become slightly better at organizing. And even touch on the very ways to run a crafty business. Trust me, I’m still learning on that one.
And while, I haven’t got to the crafty business parts in this blog yet – I promise I will if you are looking for that. Believe me, there is a lot to running even the smallest craft business. Even then there is many distractions to running it consistently.
For example, last week as I was prepping orders for Mother’s Day from my online shop, and I had a friend approach me with a request.
She stated she didn’t really mean to add more to my never ending list, but she knew I was the person who could do it. I couldn’t say no to her, she is one of my best friends. I wrote a post about the ways to overcome in saying Yes all the time, which you can read here. But, this was not one of those times.
My friend did give me over a weeks notice to create a few shirt designs ideas she thought would make great gifts for Mother’s Day.
And I’m really loving it!!
One of the designs my friend had in mind, was derived from an older picture style of t-shirt. It has some crazy chevron patterns and 70s flowers going on. I remember thinking… “what is she thinking, how am I going to tell her I don’t like it?”
I am her friend after all, and as a maker, well, we really gotta make what we love for it to be awesome.
So after some conversation over it, I came up with a modified plan on how I was going to make this design.
But deep down, I still felt like it was only going to be just okay. And kind of dreaded it for a day there.
As the time was approaching, and I really had to get this shirt done, just like some other crafty things, I decided to just go for it according to plan (which isn’t always my tactic) and hope for the best.
I cut every single letter separately in my Silhouette Machine. I piled up the letters, and got them ready to go to the heat press.
While I was aligning everything to be pressed, a calm quiet came over me.
Let me explain the calm….
If you are a maker, a crafty being, who has a million and one ideas going on in the head, sometimes so much so that you talk in a fog around others at times, you’d know this sort of calm, doesn’t happen very often.
Maybe, it is because I’m a crazy mom who works, thinks about packing kids lunches, and pick ups and drop off plans, work schedules, birthdays, trips, and you know the list, that I really become distracted in, and maybe just maybe that has created some attention problem – who really knows.
But, in the moment of creating, when the peace of a masterpiece is being made – it is then and only then, I come face to face with my WHY. Why I do the crafty things I do.
Why I create crazy shirt ideas….
Why I create jewelry personalized with names….
Why I embroidery birthday outfits and shirts….
Why I cut thousands of vinyl letters….
Why I create the personalized things….
It is because of YOU. You the person who needs something special. A keepsake with words or phrases that mean so much to you or the person you are giving it to. In turn it becomes to mean so much to me.
It’s you who loves what I have created, and I still have days that I just want to pinch myself, that SOMEBODY, actually wants something I have made.
It’s you who will cherish the embroidered baby blanket for years to come as you little one grows old.
The you who are the teachers who love their monograms on a lunch tote, or a personalized cup.
The mothers, the Nana’s the Granna’s and Grandmas who tear up at the sterling silver charms hand stamped with their kids and grandkids names on them.
The you who love the beaded or bangle bracelets I’ve made and you stack them high, brand name or not you don’t care.
It YOU, who chooses to support my small business proudly adorning the handmade goods I’ve made for you so that you can show off your personality and who you really are. It is you!
As, I made the shirt for my friend, and read it to myself, a different meaning came over in the calm than what the shirt was really intended for. For me, it changed as I read the words on that shirt, I knew they were meant for me.
Hope: Hope that God willing, I can continue to make personalized creations for others for as long as I am able and willing in this life.
Pray: Prayers for strength, that my hands will be strong and never age or weaken, and that I not always become frustrated at the amount of orders due. For it is my WHY that will bring me through the harder long nights that I might dare to dream to still have in my life.
Fight: Because if we want something bad enough, we have to be willing to fight for it.
As I finished that shirt, my “WHY” I do the things I do brought the realization of why I create personalized things. And the shirt, it came out beyond greater than I ever expected.
I have added it to my shop, as I know, someone will want it for someone in their life for its true design of: Hope of a cure. But for me, it will stand as the reminder of a shirt design, on the Why, I do what I do, and it is because I love do so.
I don’t know if I have inspired you to determine what your personal why is, but I want to challenge you that if you don’t know why you do what you do. Then go find it.
Maybe it is your kids, your family, who knows. I cannot answer that for you, only you can.
My favorite quote is by George Bernard Shaw – Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
I’m doing that each and everyday in the creations of the things I make for others.
I will continue to share, learn and create. And hopefully motivate and inspire others to do the same as well. That’s my blogs mission after all, and well, that’s exactly what we are going to do here.
